Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was the main author of the Declaration of Independence and was a proponent of democracy, individual rights, and equality; Jefferson's contributions left an indelible mark on the shaping of American political philosophy and governance.

Before his presidency, he was the first Secretary of State under George Washington and then Vice President to John Adams. Jefferson's presidency is most noted for the Louisiana Purchase, a monumental land acquisition that doubled the size of the United States, and his advocacy for the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the western territories.

Jefferson was a Renaissance man with a wide array of interests. He made significant contributions to architecture and education, founding the University of Virginia.
